I came across a fascinating study recently about purpose — and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.
If you’re someone who’s been trying to get back into shape, stay consistent, or just find that spark again, this one’s for you.
In the study, two groups were asked to carry a 25-pound backpack up a steep hill.
Same load. Same hill.
But here’s the twist — the group that believed they were carrying something important not only performed better but said it felt easier.
Why?
Because their effort meant something.
Their why changed how heavy the work felt.
When your effort has meaning, it transforms from a chore into a mission.
So if you’ve been struggling to stick with your workouts, stay on track with your nutrition, or push through those afternoon cravings — take a moment to reconnect with your why.
Is it because you want to:
💪 Feel confident in your clothes again?
🏃 Have more energy to play with your kids after work?
💗 Protect your long-term health and live life fully — for decades to come?
Whatever your reason is, own it.
Here’s how to keep that purpose front and center:
1. Write it down.
Get clear about what drives you. “I’m showing up for my workouts so I can feel strong and capable every day.”
Want a little inspo for your “why”? Watch this video from a few years ago by a Dutch company, but consider yourself warned, you might get dust in your eyes!
2. Remind yourself.
When motivation dips, visualize that purpose. Say it out loud before your workout or meal prep.
3. Connect it to your bigger picture.
Every healthy choice isn’t just about today — it’s about what you’re building for tomorrow.
Because when your effort feels important, it’s no longer “dead weight.”
It’s momentum with meaning.
You’re not just working out…
You’re carrying something that matters.
Get After It!
